We are now at an inflection point where the most advanced AI systems are not just assisting humans \u2014 they are acting autonomously, pursuing multi-step goals, using tools, making decisions, and delivering completed outcomes without requiring continuous human involvement. This is what is meant by Agentic AI, and its implications for how organisations operate are profound.<\/p>\n<h2>What Agentic AI Actually Is<\/h2>\n<p>An AI agent is a system that can perceive its environment, plan a sequence of actions to achieve a goal, execute those actions using tools (web search, code execution, API calls, file manipulation, communication), and adapt its plan based on the results. The critical distinction from a chatbot or a copilot is autonomy: an agent does not just respond to each prompt \u2014 it pursues an objective across many steps, making intermediate decisions along the way.<\/p>\n<p>A simple example: instead of asking an AI to help you research a topic (providing summaries for you to assemble), you give an agent the task of producing a comprehensive competitive intelligence briefing. The agent searches for information, identifies the most relevant sources, reads and synthesises them, structures the findings, identifies gaps and seeks to fill them, and delivers a completed document \u2014 with you reviewing the output rather than directing each step.<\/p>\n<p>More complex examples are already in production. In supply chain management, autonomous agents are detecting disruptions, identifying alternative sources, generating purchase orders, and notifying stakeholders \u2014 all without human initiation.<\/p>\n<h2>Why the Inflection Point Is Now<\/h2>\n<p>Three converging factors are making 2026 the year that agentic AI moves from research prototype to enterprise deployment. First, the underlying foundation models have become sufficiently capable and reliable to act as the reasoning engine for agents across a wide range of business tasks. The reliability gap \u2014 the frequency of errors and hallucinations that made earlier agent deployments impractical \u2014 has narrowed significantly in the most recent model generations.<\/p>\n<p>Second, the tooling ecosystem for building and deploying agents has matured rapidly. Frameworks like LangGraph, AutoGen, and CrewAI, combined with enterprise platforms from Salesforce, ServiceNow, and Microsoft, have made agent deployment accessible to organisations without deep AI engineering capability.<\/p>\n<p>Third \u2014 and perhaps most importantly \u2014 the early enterprise deployments are generating credible, measurable results that are creating competitive pressure. When a law firm&#8217;s AI agent can process a data room in hours that would take a team of lawyers weeks, the competitive implications for organisations that are not deploying equivalent capabilities become impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n<h2>The Governance Imperative<\/h2>\n<p>The transition from AI as assistant to AI as actor introduces a governance challenge that is qualitatively different from anything organisations have faced with earlier AI types. When AI is making consequential decisions and taking real actions in the world \u2014 sending communications, processing transactions, modifying systems, committing to contracts \u2014 the questions of accountability, oversight, and error correction become urgent.<\/p>\n<p>Several governance principles are emerging from early adopters. First: match autonomy to risk. Low-stakes, reversible actions can be delegated to agents with light oversight. High-stakes, irreversible actions require human-in-the-loop review before execution. The art is defining these boundaries precisely and maintaining them as agent capabilities expand.<\/p>\n<p>Second: design for failure visibility. Agents will make mistakes. The governance question is not how to prevent all errors \u2014 it is how to detect them quickly, understand them clearly, and correct them before they compound. This requires robust logging, clear escalation paths, and regular audits of agent actions and outputs.<\/p>\n<p>Third: assign clear accountability. For every agent operating in a material business process, there must be a named human accountable for its actions. &#8216;The AI decided&#8217; is not an acceptable response to a consequential error. The accountability architecture for agentic AI must be designed before deployment, not after an incident.<\/p>\n<h2>The Window to Prepare Is Now<\/h2>\n<p>The organisations best positioned to exploit agentic AI are not necessarily those with the largest AI budgets or the most sophisticated technology. They are those with clean, accessible data; mature API infrastructure that agents can use; clear process documentation that agents can follow; and governance frameworks that can be extended to cover autonomous action.<\/p>\n<p>Most of these foundations are worth building regardless of agentic AI \u2014 they are the prerequisites for AI maturity more generally. But the agentic context gives them renewed urgency. The organisations that invest in these foundations now will be ready to deploy agents at scale when the technology matures another step. Those that wait will face a longer runway to capture value, while competitors who prepared are already ahead.<\/p>\n<p>The inflection point is here.
